top 20 film clips - the final 6

May 13th 2007 09:57
it has taken me over two weeks to try and narrow this selection down, and i just can't do it! there is no way that you can narrow all of the film clips in the world into a top 20, so i had to cheat a bit. instead of doing the top six as the best ever, i thought i would do a personal selection of clips that changed my life as i was growing up, after all that is where my passion for music really started. and what better way to only choose aussie classics that have so many memories for me. so here we go!

friday on my mind - the easybeats

one of those rocking little numbers from the beatnick era. shot in black and white (not as an artistic preference), this song really pathed the way for aussie rock. a young and spunky looking stevie wright, displaying his dancing skills and showing that true australian style of having a laugh at yourself. the audience dancing is the most hilarious of all though.

errol - australian crawl

a song that reminds me of summer as a kid. jumping into my brothers 'e.h.' holden, chucking the australian crawl tape in the player and going down to the beach for the day. and how can you go past 5 gangly australian men running along the beach in pink shorts. or sitting in a spa surrounded by 'shazzys', proudly showing off their chest hair. gold.... pure gold.

u.s. forces - midnight oil

as a youngster, i never really understood what peter and his merry men were singing about, and it wasn't until a few years later that i realised just how politically charged this fantastic, rocking, aussie band were. love the idea of how little the man is against the machine in this clip, and the way that peter dances (of course). it's funny how we are still basically protesting about the same shit now, but it is different faces doing it.

nick the stripper - the birthday party

this was the start of my transission into punk music. not knowing who 'the birthday party' were i remember picking up a tape from the local library of these guys when i was 8 years old. i took it home and it blew my mind away with how music could sound and be played - even at that early age. i didn't revisit the birthday party for a few years after till i was about 14, but nick cave certainly had an influence in my musical taste. who would have thought they would all go on to do what they have?

die yuppie die - the painters and dockers

i was the coolest 12 year old ever because i knew who 'the painters and dockers' were and could sing 'die yuppie die' to all of my friends. they had no idea what i was talking about but maybe i slightly influenced those youngsters in some way with my ever growing love of punk music. i think these guys also influenced me to my liking of ska music, which would flourish into a passion for reggea, jungle, and then drum and bass. these guys were one of the craziest aussie bands of their time and gave birth to the slogan 'die yuppie die'. it was a real toss up between this track and 'nude school', but a man jumping around in melbourne's city in a shirt with a giant dollar sign on it seemed to have more appeal than the band getting naked in a pig farm.

and so it comes down to my last clip in this selection. this was a very, very difficult decision to make but after pulling much hair out this is it:

never tear us apart - inxs

i think i am a sappy romantic at heart, and this track/clip couldn't possible be anymore romantic. cold grey look, european setting, big warm coats, cobble stone streets, and the sexiest male performer that ever was. inxs would have to have been the best australian band ever (apart from this ridiculous reformation that they seem to be doing at the moment) and this is one of their best songs. it is complemented by this uber-romantisist film clip to serve as a reminder that there will never be another michael hutchence. what a wonderful performer, what a great band, and what a ground breaking film clip.
