top 20 clips - what are yours?
April 21st 2007 13:16
a couple of days ago, a friend of mine told me that rage is having a competition. all you have to do is submit your top 20 film clips ever and you could guest program rage for one saturday night (this has been my childhood dream!). after years of us both being 'serious' music video watchers, we then agreed that it is just impossible to try and narrow all of them into a top 20.
over the last few days i have been thinking about this and am no where near a top twenty, but have a few contenders in mind. i thought this also might tie into the orble trend of late of best/worst films by a few of the other orblers that contribute content.
window licker - aphex twin
a pretty obvious choice in 'window licker', but i don't think you could have a top 20 without including chris cunningham/aphex twin. you could probably do a top 20 with him alone!
learning to fly - foo fighters
this clip makes me laugh my ass off exery time i see it. excellent narrative, a cameo from 'tenacious d', and directed by jesse peretz. a fantastic period of continually fine clips from the foo fighters, but htis would be their pinacle.
sober - tool
this was one of those clips that changed my attitude to music clips and fascinated me for years. this really set new standards for stop motion animation - both in the style and the techniques used. i also feel that the abscence of a clear narrative really allows the viewer to interpret the story freely. it still makes me squirmy now...
metallica - one
it took me years to find out the movie in this clip is called 'johnny got his gun', and i just had to run out and get a copy and watch it when i did. good movie. anyway, the clip.... this came from a time when heavy metal bands were doing clips focused around how high they could tease their hair. it was refreshing to then see a clip that mused it's lyric with a cinematic experience to enhance the viewers pleasure. nice look (colour) and effective use of lighting. don't much care for watching the head banging bit though.
beastie boys - sabotage
spike jonze's comical take on 70s american detective series. brilliant costumes, well directed, funny story, and brilliant performance (esp. from hurricane!). brilliant track also!
chemical brothers - let forever be
just to round off the perfect trio of cunningham/jonze/gondrey, i had to include this gem by michel gondrey. this clip still amazes me and i cannot begin to fathom how to produce something like this. clever, clever, clever.
chemical brothers - star guitar
i couldn't decide between this and let forever be, so included both. again gondrey in all his glory. i like his visual representation of a kind of sequncer. each sound has a particular object that plays out through this piece. gold.
so there are 7 candidates in my top 20. has anyone else got suggestions before i sort through the thousands that i have floating in my head?

My suggestions will be pretty hopelessly outdated but I'll offer them anyway (Because I used to love watching Video Clips ... but haven't done so for a while) ...
There was a Billy Idol one (can't remember the name of the song ... It wasn't White Wedding ... It was after he'd had an accident and they could only show his top half ... it was sexual and erotic etc ... there was a woman next door ... but I loved that clip ...
It would be pretty hard to leave one of Michael Jackson's out ... (and one of Weird Al Jankovich's) ... But not 'Ben' okay? * (And no Jackson 5, either, okay? (And no Osmonds or Partridge Family ...
I'd certainly include a live performance video clip ... (just for the sheer energy the performers and crowd generate ... [One of my favourites (and I'm not gay, okay?) is the Elton John / George Michael ... 'Don't let the Sun Go Down on Me' clip ... it's to do with the energy and the way its shot, not their bums, okay? [Or maybe Hendrix?

glad that you liked my selection. this is a really hard process to try and limit myself to 20 at the max. you \tube certainly does make it easier.

it is the top 20 of all time so there are no time restrictions. and from your choices, i now understand completely where you come from in your writings!!
i think the billy idol song you mean might be 'eyes without a face' - nice choice. frizzy hair... that lip thing... frosty lenses.
michael jackson was someone i never thought of.. but of course 'beat it!!!' not as gay as ben, and not as glitzy as 'black and white'. i think i would delete your comment had you said ben!
i don't know what to say about elton john/george michael. i think you said it all....
