"There is no progress in art, any more than there is progress in making love. There are simply different ways of doing it." Man Ray
the never ending debate is always raging as to the quality of the information that is available on wikipedia. the onlline information encyclopedia that is for wikipedians, written by wikipedians. it is hard for me to take an un-biased opinion of this as i am a firm believer that wiki is all good, however i will attempt to be diplomatic in this discussion of the world's coolest information resource.

wiki is good because:
>it allows open input into the content which allows diversity of this content,
>the content is forever evolving - as the more people research and discover, the more that is added to this database,

>the content is allowed to be edited by whoever, ensuring that there is a natural police system to control any misinformation,
>the history of the edits are accessible to all so it can be seen how the information has been contributed,
>it has a never ending hypertextual, rhizomic form to it that encourages the reader to access multiple sources for any information,
>it is working on all media formats,
>oesn't pretend to be something that it is not.

these are some substantial reasons as to why i believe it is a credible source of information, and why i continue to use it as such. so it makes me wonder why there is such a scared attitude out there to this information? this opinion is one that is expressed by the same person that would pick up the newspaper in the morning and believe that it is a coincidence that david hicks' trial has been shifted to after the next australian election. wouldn't it be fair to say 'exercise caution' when consuming any form of information? i think wikipedians are more likely to adhere to their own set of conduct when moving about the pages and pro/consuming information.

this is why i feel angry when i hear about schools such as middlebury college in the uk having banned the use of citing wikipedia as academic sources. i thought universities were supposed to be a place where intelligent people lurked? somewhere that was designed to expand one's mind into other thinking dimensions and not implode it on itself? why then would they do this?

if you read this article from a research project into the affects of digital media on youths, it places wikipedia into a more suitable context to be used. i can't help but think of that telstra add. the one where the little boy asks his dad about the great wall of china. "to keep the rabbits out" is his worldly and wisely retort. if we only have one source for anything, don''t we become completely one minded?

in this sense, i also believe that it is impossible to rely solely on wikipedia for your information, but it is something that can be used as a starting point or for reference. apart from that it is useful to gain knowledge on things that be more of a 'folksonomy' rather than something that is in the oxford. what does oxford say about 'crackheads'? well, this is what wiki said about it....

what does other people think about wikipedia and using it as a source?

too many rabbits!

yellow dust - masks a must!

April 1st 2007 17:43
to continue on this series of doom and gloom entries of late, i thought i would enlighten the anthroblogogy readers to my environmental situation at the moment.

yellow dust storms in south korea
down town seoul. image from terradaily.com
i awoke this morning to read this newspaper article from the korea herald. this is also all over the television due to the yellow dust storms are the worst they have ever been. and if you walk outside, it is easy to see why.

this is a result of china's massive push on industrialisation, and the lack of winter type weather on their northern deserts. so as a result, china, korea, and japan have to put up with toxic sand blowing across their respective countries for 3 months every year. this dust is particularly bad for the elderly, the young and paople with respiratory and heart conditions. we are advised to stay indoors, with some schools opting for a day off classes during the worst of it. we are also told to wash our hands and feet(?) more regularly, although some of the guys around here should probably do that anyway.

face masks
the suggested apparel for the next few months
unfortunately each year gets worse and worse. so much so that masks are now a neccesity. i remember the first time that i saw on the news that people have to actually wear face masks because the air pollution was too inadequate to breathe normally. now it seems quite normal to be doning your favourite face mask and not so much like a scene from a david lynch film set in the future on some isolated sun planet.

at first when we arrived in seoul, it was only the elderly and young children that were wearing the masks, but now they are being worn by virtually everyone. if you see someone not wearing one, you instinctively want to tell the person to 'put one on as we are having a highly toxic day today'. it still makes me shiver to even contemplate that, let alone write a joke about it.

however, i think you do have to keep high spirits about the whole situation. this is what most of the people here do, as this is really a situation that is out of control of most people. unfortunately the majority of the population has to suffer because of a few crap decisions that are being followed out by a few.

the perfect woman....

March 23rd 2007 12:00
have you ever had problems sleeping during those hot and balmy sumer nights? you know the ones where you seem to stick to everything and everything else that you don't stick to you want to just make go away? and how annoying is it when your woman comes in for a cuddle and all she does is make you sweat? well..... here's the solution!!!

the perfect woman
the wooden wife
introducing the wooden wife! and no shit that is what it's called. i managed to take this snap at the hanok village in seoul, which is a tourist attraction now, and this was as close as i could get to it. it has a very funny name but it has a very interesting back story and an even more interesting use.

the wooden wife dates back to the 14th century when king sejong was in rule. he is said to have been the most cleverest of the emperors because of how he invented the hangeul alphabet enabling the entire population of korea to be educated and improve communication. his other credits included the wooden wife. yeah big up sejong!

being made from bamboo, which is one of the coolest woods around, it is of a sturdy design and has the one use: to not make you hot when you sleep in the summer.

when you were tired of your multiple women, who were let's face it, just far too hot for you on a summer night, one could retire to the outdoor balcony and wrap themselves around the trusty old cool wife and snuggle in for a good nights sleep. also being about six feet long, you could wrap the entire body around it, ensuring you comfortable and well rested for a full day of ruling your country when you wake in the morn.

she didn't fight back, you most certainly didn't want to saw your arm off in the morning, and i imagine you could probably open a beer on her when the need arose. what more could the ruler of a truly great nation ask for?

is the internet a safe gaming zone?

March 15th 2007 09:28
i managed to stumble across this article today by the bbc seoul correspondant, caroline gluck. basically it is an article about a 24 south korean gamer that died in 2002 after an 86 hour bender of virtually non-stop internet gaming.

pc bang
nestled in amongst the usual lotterias and clothes shops, you will see all of the pc bangs
as south korea is one of the most wired countries in the world, it stands to reason that it is a gamers paradise and gamers come from all over the world to embrace the chaos of the fastest access to their favourite games like 'starcraft' or 'fifa online 2007'. it is rare to walk into any of the internet rooms, or pc bangs as they are called here that number over the 20 000 in seoul alone, and for them to be empty. and that can be at any time of the day or night

man, this is technical shit!

February 14th 2007 16:15
globally, we all have different ideas on etiquette when it comes to toileting. my first confrontation with this was in doha not so long ago (check here). however, now it seems i am in the electronic capital of the world and this seems to extend into their toilets - no shit!

techy shitter
welcome! to the bidet future....
when we checked into our 'love motel', we went through the usual motions of checking everything out which generally includes opening and closing everything with a hinge, turning everything on and off with a switch, and running naked through every room in the place. when i opened the door to the bathroom, you could imagine my excitement to be greeted by this bad boy. i didn't know if it was the control chair for the enterprise, or simply the most tricked-up toilet that ever was! upon opening the lid, it was confirmed it was indeed a new wave toilet. i then noticed the control panel next to it and was overwhelmed with intrigue, along with aghast
