record review - fuck me u.s.a.
May 14th 2007 12:29
this is a strange, yet well constructed, little ensemble built entirely upon a concept. with a slogan of “more guns than goodfellas, more cocaine than scarface”, one tends to think fuck me u.s.a. are having a bit of a laugh at what they are doing. whilst having a laugh they are certainly producing some fairly descent tracks.
emerging from the central part of england, they were concepted in february 2006 and have just realeased their first self titled 12" on the 4th of may 2007. with a self quote of sounding like "Alan Vega, Sigue Sigue Sputnik's 'Flaunt It', and Underworld layered with Velvet Underground guitars", their sound is one that is progressing that which was pioneered by the likes of 'underworld' and the 'chemical brothers' during the mid 90s. the title is something that contradicts the overall sound of the album.
as a two piece act, they seem to blend together well to produce melodic rythms that places the listener into a certain groove that will then be completely interrupted by a jolting crescendo of hard rock guitars with big rock drums as displayed on the track 'southside johnny'. the opening track of 'jimmy stateside' shows the band's momentum of electronic beats of around 150bpm, fusing with a rock sound that would be at home on an album by iggy and the stooges. the vocals maintain a big sound backed with a massive reverb to enhance the listener into a place that is dominated by fuck me u.s.a., something that richard ashcroft would be proud of.
whilst listening to this album in its entirety, it seemed to suck me into its sound in a trance type way. it reminded me of seeing new order back in 2003 for some reason. i think this may be due to the way the beats progress with a beautifully layered style. from beginning with a quite minimal sound, the progressions build and build all the while being enhanced by the vocals, finally (and quite rarely) being broken down into track endings. this time is short and we again relapse into an emersion of a steady build back into it's hypnotic 150 bpm again. it is an album that deffinately takes you on a ride. if lou reed were to start something today, i am certain he would be calling on these lads to back him.
fuck me u.s.a. is an album that is both progressive and crossing multiple genres and styles. upon the first listen, it is clear it is something that is timeless and is a concept that has perfected this merge of styles with results that should impress music lovers from many different schools. a worthy addition to any collection.

Interesting title for the band.... I wonder if they will be known as Bleep Me USA in future.... the radio announcers will have to be bleeped everytime they mention their name
