random acts of senseless packaging
March 19th 2007 15:59
everything in korea semms to be individually portioned, proudly wrapped in cling film or simply in a packet that is in a packet that is in a packet that is probably stored in a box, that has been transported to the shop in an even bigger box. but the peole here are completely happy about this and seem to look at you weird when you bring a cloth bag with you to do the shopping. 'What? no plastic bag with you goods?' and a look of sheer disgust.
this got me thinking about the rubbish problem that is ever present here. from the corners that look like they haven't been cleaned for a decade, to the few bins that do exhist that are always over flowing, through to the source of the problem. then i looked in my cupboard and realised i am contributing to this.
look at what one goes through to get a chocolate cookie:
it all starts with one box:
and ends up being 1 box and six individual wrappers! for six cookies! that's a bit overkill yeah? especially considering where it all ends up. but the worst part is that i haven't been able to find an alternative way to eat chocolate cookies! moral deli larma...

I think they just enjoy opening all those packages and then littering.

Two words: Kraft Singles.
Plastic cheese inside plastic, inside plastic, inside plastic, inside cardboard.
The Koreans may be world leaders but the rest of the world is not far behind.

it is way out of control! and this is only one product. as you say, candy is wrapped individually. the worst of it though is when you go to the supermarket and your fresh vegetables have to go in a plastic bag as this is how they then price them. and unfortunately this is how it ends up....

firstly, nice 'tash. very chop chop indeed!
secondly, the kraft singles that you get here are the same except:
>they look like the fake cheese that you get on a mcdonalds burger, &
>the cling film is super glued together!
so not only is it messing up the environment with petroleum (plastic), but it is then doubling up with a nice dose of horse trotters (glue). yukky!

korea really needs to implement something like this now, or else they might end up looking like the airport scene from 'the fifth element'.

Don't get me started on overpackaging either.... I'm in good company here...
I wrote a post about my feelings on packaging, on this Link, for a really wordy comment... and maybe a smile?
Surprised to see the madness has reached Korea, they used to be so sensible?

yeah it's out of control! on all levels. from lack of government intervention through to the attitude of the people. i plan on doing more articles about it, so stay tuned.
