new young pony club - live at the forum thursday 3 jan 2008

this gig certainly set the standard for live shows in 2008. being set in the regal surroundings of the forum theatre in melbourne, my everything was in awe as soon as i took one step into the complex. however this was quickly jolted by a edgy sense to the support act that were spinning discs (whose name i never did catch). they were unimpressed with the crowd and appeared bored, as did the audience - although i suspect that everyone was still coming to grips with reality after bashing it around the head a few days prior. still, i enjoyed their take on the in sound from far out as i perused the crowd that was made up of youngsters, middle-agers, and even some curious older folk that know good music when they hear it.
one beer later and someone comes out stage left to flash control with a torch signifying that the band are ready to come on. and with that NYPC come running out as four silver banners each with the letters n y p and c fall from the heavens to provide the back drop for the next 70 minutes.
they blasted out with jerk me (a personal favourite of mine) which starts the crowd either slowly bopping or shaking their tale feather to the reminiscent sounds of that post-punk era. it was at this stage that i couldn't help but think that singer tahita bulmer was heavily influenced by michael hutchence , both lyrically and most definitely in how she moves. it was just plain simple cool to watch her sway to and fro as she amped up the crowd.
they worked their way through tracks off the album fantastic playroom and i had never realised the groove potential of the track hiding on the staircase until i heard it live - it was the track that synced the band with the audience and put us both on the same plain. as a punter, i could literally see that the band were genuinely happy that we had come out to see them and were giving them a really warm reception. you could feel the love....
the highlight of the live show had to be their interpretation of the 90s classic pump up the jam by technotronic. i didn't know whether to laugh or shake my booty because it was just so damn good! after one encore they finally wrapped up the show with the feel-good track the get go, which left everyone humming the track as they found their feet taking them to their post new young pony club destination. i was certainly pleased to have seen this gig and am curious to know how big their fan base will be when they return to our shores.
