"There is no progress in art, any more than there is progress in making love. There are simply different ways of doing it." Man Ray

new young pony club

this gig certainly set the standard for live shows in 2008. being set in the regal surroundings of the forum theatre in melbourne, my everything was in awe as soon as i took one step into the complex. however this was quickly jolted by a edgy sense to the support act that were spinning discs (whose name i never did catch). they were unimpressed with the crowd and appeared bored, as did the audience - although i suspect that everyone was still coming to grips with reality after bashing it around the head a few days prior. still, i enjoyed their take on the in sound from far out as i perused the crowd that was made up of youngsters, middle-agers, and even some curious older folk that know good music when they hear it.

one beer later and someone comes out stage left to flash control with a torch signifying that the band are ready to come on. and with that NYPC come running out as four silver banners each with the letters n y p and c fall from the heavens to provide the back drop for the next 70 minutes.

they blasted out with jerk me (a personal favourite of mine) which starts the crowd either slowly bopping or shaking their tale feather to the reminiscent sounds of that post-punk era. it was at this stage that i couldn't help but think that singer tahita bulmer was heavily influenced by michael hutchence , both lyrically and most definitely in how she moves. it was just plain simple cool to watch her sway to and fro as she amped up the crowd.

they worked their way through tracks off the album fantastic playroom and i had never realised the groove potential of the track hiding on the staircase until i heard it live - it was the track that synced the band with the audience and put us both on the same plain. as a punter, i could literally see that the band were genuinely happy that we had come out to see them and were giving them a really warm reception. you could feel the love....

the highlight of the live show had to be their interpretation of the 90s classic pump up the jam by technotronic. i didn't know whether to laugh or shake my booty because it was just so damn good! after one encore they finally wrapped up the show with the feel-good track the get go, which left everyone humming the track as they found their feet taking them to their post new young pony club destination. i was certainly pleased to have seen this gig and am curious to know how big their fan base will be when they return to our shores.

mtv get off the air!

jello biafra - mtv get off the air
thanks to wiki for the image
jello had it right when he spoke of this all those years ago.but last night, never was it driven home so much.

after a hard day of assessment, followed by some farewell drinks, i decided to call it a day and watch some television before i went to bed. unfortunately, i choose mtv to watch. now i know we live in a post modern world, but mtv talking about bad film clip conventions? c'mon they started most of them.

the show was titled something about the 100 worst film clip trickeries. i am down with taking the piss out of big hair, 80s snare drum sounds, and 'the girl that ran away from the country and and ended up in l.a. to become a big star but really ended up doing porn to support her heroin habit' type scenarios. but when mtv start talking the ugly girl makeover or incorporating homeless people into the film clip to increase 'popularity' i have start pointing the finger.

i remember years ago when mtv had a stronghold on the music film clip industry and had this massive power of the way records were sold. with this power they also had certain conventions that they themselves created for film clips. it was not unlike the way hollywood has a recipe to churn out movies. but now in 2007, we see an episode of mtv being all high and mighty and still trying to get the popularity vote by saying 'oh all those things we force feed you in the 80s, how like, stupid are they?' aaahhhhh makes me mad!!!!!!

i think the saddest part of the entire program however, was that weird al was one of the commentators. i can handle these 'almighty' comments from the middle class white boys that mtv seems to have 1000s of, but to hear weird al get in on the action made me nearly choke. his film clips are always pure gold! and it was an indicator that you were someone if weird al took you off. but there he was talking about all of these conventions and going for the cheap laugh. shame weird al, shame.

anyway let's see al yankovich in his better days:

record review - fuck me u.s.a.

May 14th 2007 12:29
fuck me usa
this is a strange, yet well constructed, little ensemble built entirely upon a concept. with a slogan of “more guns than goodfellas, more cocaine than scarface”, one tends to think fuck me u.s.a. are having a bit of a laugh at what they are doing. whilst having a laugh they are certainly producing some fairly descent tracks.

emerging from the central part of england, they were concepted in february 2006 and have just realeased their first self titled 12" on the 4th of may 2007. with a self quote of sounding like "Alan Vega, Sigue Sigue Sputnik's 'Flaunt It', and Underworld layered with Velvet Underground guitars", their sound is one that is progressing that which was pioneered by the likes of 'underworld' and the 'chemical brothers' during the mid 90s. the title is something that contradicts the overall sound of the album.

as a two piece act, they seem to blend together well to produce melodic rythms that places the listener into a certain groove that will then be completely interrupted by a jolting crescendo of hard rock guitars with big rock drums as displayed on the track 'southside johnny'. the opening track of 'jimmy stateside' shows the band's momentum of electronic beats of around 150bpm, fusing with a rock sound that would be at home on an album by iggy and the stooges. the vocals maintain a big sound backed with a massive reverb to enhance the listener into a place that is dominated by fuck me u.s.a., something that richard ashcroft would be proud of.

whilst listening to this album in its entirety, it seemed to suck me into its sound in a trance type way. it reminded me of seeing new order back in 2003 for some reason. i think this may be due to the way the beats progress with a beautifully layered style. from beginning with a quite minimal sound, the progressions build and build all the while being enhanced by the vocals, finally (and quite rarely) being broken down into track endings. this time is short and we again relapse into an emersion of a steady build back into it's hypnotic 150 bpm again. it is an album that deffinately takes you on a ride. if lou reed were to start something today, i am certain he would be calling on these lads to back him.

fuck me u.s.a. is an album that is both progressive and crossing multiple genres and styles. upon the first listen, it is clear it is something that is timeless and is a concept that has perfected this merge of styles with results that should impress music lovers from many different schools. a worthy addition to any collection.

top 20 film clips - the final 6

May 13th 2007 09:57
it has taken me over two weeks to try and narrow this selection down, and i just can't do it! there is no way that you can narrow all of the film clips in the world into a top 20, so i had to cheat a bit. instead of doing the top six as the best ever, i thought i would do a personal selection of clips that changed my life as i was growing up, after all that is where my passion for music really started. and what better way to only choose aussie classics that have so many memories for me. so here we go!

koreans and their festivals

May 11th 2007 03:43
sangmyung university festival
what was once a soccer field is now a massive stage!
this is certainly the festival season for the south koreans, and to back up the last two that we have experienced in the last two weekends, my university is in the middle of a three day university festival. when i ask the students why it is on, they simply reply with 'just because'. fair enough then, that's a good enough reason as any.

this event sees all of the faculties closing down and basically turning into pubs for three consecutive days. much fun and madness is being had by all, with entertainment being scheduled at the end of each night on the enormous main stage that has been erected where soccer is normally played. last night saw the opening night of festivities

last night a dj saved my life

May 10th 2007 03:40
break beat stage at seoul world dj fest
spring has sprung in south korea and this has seen an increase of outdoor activities on offer around the country side. one of high mention (and yes i did mention it last week) is the hi seoul festival. this is the 5th year that this has been running and they have got it down to a fine art. the entire city is a gasp with activity to celebrate both spring and the han river and there are a variety of events on offer for all sorts of age groups.

this weekend we decided to go to the first seoul dj fest, a festival that was going over 2 nights and was free. they provided camping for 3500 won (about 5 aussie dollars) for the two nights but unfortunately we missed out on that, and we only managed to catch to the second night

top 20 clips - what are yours?

April 21st 2007 13:16
a couple of days ago, a friend of mine told me that rage is having a competition. all you have to do is submit your top 20 film clips ever and you could guest program rage for one saturday night (this has been my childhood dream!). after years of us both being 'serious' music video watchers, we then agreed that it is just impossible to try and narrow all of them into a top 20.

over the last few days i have been thinking about this and am no where near a top twenty, but have a few contenders in mind. i thought this also might tie into the orble trend of late of best/worst films by a few of the other orblers that contribute content

love of diagrams - mosaic

April 14th 2007 13:57
love of diagrams
i don't know if it is me, but i seemed to be drawn to this certian sound of late. one that is comprised of massive bass lines rolling in the background with minmal instruments on top and a slightly off key or an off beat sound to it. without singling out one attribute of this gestalt, i certainly love its whole!

that love for this sound is exactly what i get when i listen to the new album from love of diagrams, 'mosaic', out now through matador records. the album blasts out with this 'rock as' drum beat, muted guitar riff, then this pounding bass engulfs the entire sound and takes it to a new place. the initial vocal is done by luke horton, and i would be lying if i said that there isn't a hint of thurston moore present from his harmonic tone. luke's sound is then complimented by the introduction of antonia sellbach's vocals. the overall sound is one that is reflective of the 'no wave' scene that emerged from new york in the late 70s and early 80, hence the sonic youth aural reference. however this is like sonic youth met peter hook of joy division fame, mixed it with some swervedriver, and re invented the way out sound for now

slam dance etiquette

March 24th 2007 20:49
growing up, there was nothing better than going to a live music venue on thursday, friday, or saturday night. at this age, i was between 15 and 22 and going through my 'angry young man' stage, hence i liked my music to be either heavy or punk. and when you danced, you danced hard. this was my introduction to slam dancing.

the point that i dropped into it was in the post new wave area, so punk had already laid the foundations for slam dancing. it consisted of people jumping and throwing themselves into each other whilst having a great time listening to music. people were rarely hurt (well not seriously anyway) and it was the best way for a room full of men to get their aggression out without picking up weapons or taking to each other for no apparent reason. my mother could never understand it and looking back now, i suppose it was a way to deal with testosterone and emotions in a growing boy, that had something to protest to the rest of the world. this was a place where he could do it amongst friends that felt the same
