asparagus - the documentary

November 3rd 2007 09:14
so here is one of the reasons for the lack of posting on orble in the last little while.... my documentary that i have been producing (well editing) for the last six months. but it is finally finished and i would like to share it with others. basically:

it is a small snippet into gloria's life and her temporary version of the unit we call a family. this is the final assessment piece for the subject tv2 in my second year of media. check out the music also by two4k, a.k.a. carl anderson.

for a blow by blow of the production process, check out my media blog.

enjoy!!

alternative communication

June 11th 2007 18:05
communicating in means other than words seems to be the theme of my thinking patterns this week, so i have been exploring alternative forms of communication. what use does a word have if the person you are communication it to has no idea of its meaning? by saying it slower or louder at them doesn't help the situation any (which annoys me to no end!), and the conversation just, well, stops. or you might end up getting an ashtray when you asked for a glass of cab sav!

the trumpet of the swan
the book the trumpet of the swan by e.b. white, is a fine example of this. it basically is about a swan that cannot communicate the same way that other swans do. he ends up going to school and learning how to read and write by writing on a slate around his neck. he returns home and tries to tell one of the lady swans that he loves her, but she cannot read so she just swims away. his father then steals him a trumpet and louis learns how to play it, which becomes his new form of communication. he then returns home, trumpets his way into his beloved female swans heart, has cygnets and lives happily ever after.

this beautiful, well constructed novel metaphorically states the bleeding obvious. there is a way to communicate to everyone, we just need to find out how. just because we understand one form of communication well, that doesn't necessarily mean that others will. and when we start using multiple forms of communication simultaneously, all hell has the potential of breaking loose. maybe someone should have taught george w how to play a trumpet.

words mean so little
coming to end of the semester, it also brings with it the finalization of all of the deadlines, late night cram sessions, and frantic time rescheduling to try and fit in all of those group projects that we have embarked upon. it also brings a certain amount of joy and fulfillment knowing that the projects we have created are both successful and completed.

having just completed one of my korean cinema projects, of which was to create a 20 minute short film, the best part of the semester happened last night. as much fun as it was to create these films with groups of truly creative people, it is more fun to spend four hours watching the fruits of our collective labour. it was a truly great night and a really great chance to see who the next big names in the korean cinema world are going to be

should blogging be a mere rehash?

bloggers come in all shapes and sizes - reviewers, informers, shit stirrers - but all have something to say. but as i cruise around the internet, i sometimes come across the same information that has been cut and paste into numerous amounts of entries. do we need an editor to control this type of internecine information?

sometimes information is simply that, information and it cannot be given to a viewer other than in the correct answer form. it might be para-phrased, but in essence it is virtually the same information. conversely something could be critically written, in which case the reader has to approach the information with how the information is being presented as opposed to what the information actually is. in both cases the information is there to inform, potentially giving the outcome where the reader should walk away engaged with their new knowledge

female bloggers - bloghers

May 12th 2007 04:33
as i gaze into the winter of my dismay.... courtesy of the age.
i found this article the other day in the age on tuesday the 8th of may 2007.

it basically goes on about how there are not many women blogging out there and then goes on to say that they do it differently! in my blogging experience, i would have to say that i have come across maybe even more female bloggers than male ones. and of course the style of communication is different - it is written by a woman! isn't any form communication different between a male and a female

is blogging making us smarter?

April 27th 2007 04:23
pie chart on blogging knowledge

i have been involved with the orble community for around 6 months now and have been very impressed with the quality of content that is covered and discussed. it is one of my most visited sites now and is up there as a source of information for all sorts of topics. i can find out communication trends, sports results, movie reviews, culture tendencies, spiritual antics and all things in between. not only can i find out information, but it is then open for discussion amongst those that stop by for their daily fix.

one thing that i must comment on is the high quality of writing skills and the intelligence of some of the contributors. this then leads me to ask the question of 'is blogging making us smarter?' is it only this blogging community or is it something that is familiar with blogging communities in general? i compare this to a regular conversation, say in a friends lounge room at night, where we have a few drinks, just finished dinner and are shooting the shit. catergories that you might discuss are similar to those that are covered in this community. 'did you see the demons beat the tigers?' or ' what do you think of that new movie by the korean director dude

this weekend - insadong

April 23rd 2007 04:11
sunday provided us with the chance to check out insadong province in seoul. this is an area that is aimed at western tourists, so i had mixes emotions about the entire day. even at home a i generally stay away from areas that are aimed at these kind of markets, but when in rome... although it is quite a beautiful area that reeks with korean tradition, it is also quite plastic in that it is catering for the mass audience from the western world - and that is indeed who was there.

we did stumble across some nice galleries and i could have spent millions of won on many of the contemporary pop art pieces that were on offer, and there were of course many places to eat and nibble and refresh. one thing that i had to ponder over was why are we traveling to these places to see different cultures, yet these different cultures are trying so eagerly to accommodate and assimilate to our culture? but then who are we to tell them not to? i also had to wonder where it will all end up in a few decades from now

choice eh wibro!

wibro connection
to further on yesterdays discussion of internet technologies, where the japanese are ignoring the benefits of the old pc and turning towards mobile technologies, here is some more information relating to convergence, mobile technology, and internet stuff.

i don't feel as if i could let go of my mac. i use it for far too much other than just emails, downloading, and internet stuff. what about editing, word processing, web designing blah blah blah. so it is not an option for me to change my mac for a little button mobile phone. i need my big machine, but i also need high speed internet access while mobile. enter the koreans

the end is nigh?

convergence
all in one mobile technologies
this article was passed to me from a friend of mine, and i think it raises issues that we should consider. basically it is discussing internet trends amongst the next generation of internet users and how they are ignoring the old pc and turning towards mobile technology for their needs.

as a uni student, a few years ago the emphasis that was pushed at us was one that encompassed mobile technology and introduced the idea of convergence. at the time i was a little hesitant of this and couldn't understand what the idea was. however as time passed i could see what they were trying to educate us with, and now there are university studies backing this along with generations of users feeling the brunt of not being able to use computers

well it doesn't really, but google search engines certainly think it does! what am i talking about you might ask? well....

last week i wrote an article about south koreans not saying sorry. it received much trafiic (thank you) and still does. one comment in particular from ahmed told me about about a story that happened to him and was relative to mine. within that text he used the words 'bleh, life sucks'. now i'm not sure if ahmed is a super geek and knew exactly what he was doing or it was pure coincidence, but some strange traffic events happened after
