koreans and their festivals

this is certainly the festival season for the south koreans, and to back up the last two that we have experienced in the last two weekends, my university is in the middle of a three day university festival. when i ask the students why it is on, they simply reply with 'just because'. fair enough then, that's a good enough reason as any.
this event sees all of the faculties closing down and basically turning into pubs for three consecutive days. much fun and madness is being had by all, with entertainment being scheduled at the end of each night on the enormous main stage that has been erected where soccer is normally played. last night saw the opening night of festivities.
there was a buzz around all afternoon the 'psye' was going to be performing, who apparently is someone of importance here. everyone was sitting down eating and drinking for about five hours straight when all of a sudden, there was a mad rush to the main stage area. i also joined this rush to see what all of the fuss was about.
when i arrived there, the crowd was chanting for their hero, in a 'konglish' kind of way.
'sy-ee-ko', 'sy-ee-ko' 'sy-ee=ko' they chanted and chanted, when eventually this tubby little man comes out with his posse of four hip hoppers. i have to say that it was the worst concert i have ever been to! it was just terrible! it felt like karaoke in steroids in that it was just some gut singing to a backing track. and the backing track was made from the latest casio beats! he went on for a while and then something happened that i have never seen before....
everyone has been to those concerts where the love song happens and the entire audience holds up their lighters and sways romantically as bon jovi, for example, was telling us to 'never say goodbye'. (it always made me giggle when someone would burn their fingers.) anyway, since i live super techno gadget land, lighters are out and cell phones are in! the song started, the lights dropped, and everyone got their cell phones out and swayed along. being in the middle of the crowd, it was one of the most beautiful sights i had ever seen, in a geeky kind of way.
then the show ended as abruptly as it had started! he finished his song, walked off stage, jumped in his little mini van, and justed pissed right off out of there! the crowd were still chanting, but they soon worked it out that it was doing no good, and it slowly just stopped. everyone slowly started to walk off then with a kind of half excited/half ripped off feeling. oh well, it was a free concert. nice one 'sy-ee-ko', 'sy-ee-ko!'

Flashes of memories
When I was at RObbie WIlliams last year the cell phone thinghappened - it`s great isn`t it? Just the most incredible sight.
I love how the festival is 'just because' - that is right up my alley!

yeah sometimes 'just because' are the best times of all and planning can sometimes by the best way to ruin an event. the cell phone thing is something that i have never experienced before. it is really something. maximum effect from these little devices that have integrated into our lives so thoroughly.
