will earth hour, or jetstar, really do anything?

this saturday night at 8pm (aedst) we are all being encouraged to turn off our lights and electrical devices for an hour. i have no problem with that in itself and i think it will be a good thing to participate in. however how much will this really save or is it moreover an exercise in realisation for the masses?
i come in with this type of thinking after having seen an advert this morning for jetstar. it was the typical shot of someone happy and in mid jump - however the slogan over the top was something about offsetting carbon emissions. i am clearly not an expert in this field but from what i understand it is about offloading your amount of emissions, in a financial way, to another company that doesn't let off as many.
now there hasn't been any technology released that puts a huge muffler on air planes to stop the amount of smoke coming out of the back of them, so the fact remains the same that they are still putting out as much as they always have. it doesn't matter if you are selling these toxins to some one else to make you feel better at night, the fact remains the same that there is still massive amounts of shit coming out the back of air planes!!
so how does this advert warrant any kind of celebration again? oh, that's right. it doesn't.
