yellow dust - masks a must!

April 1st 2007 17:43
to continue on this series of doom and gloom entries of late, i thought i would enlighten the anthroblogogy readers to my environmental situation at the moment.

i awoke this morning to read this newspaper article from the korea herald. this is also all over the television due to the yellow dust storms are the worst they have ever been. and if you walk outside, it is easy to see why.

this is a result of china's massive push on industrialisation, and the lack of winter type weather on their northern deserts. so as a result, china, korea, and japan have to put up with toxic sand blowing across their respective countries for 3 months every year. this dust is particularly bad for the elderly, the young and paople with respiratory and heart conditions. we are advised to stay indoors, with some schools opting for a day off classes during the worst of it. we are also told to wash our hands and feet(?) more regularly, although some of the guys around here should probably do that anyway.

face masks
the suggested apparel for the next few months
unfortunately each year gets worse and worse. so much so that masks are now a neccesity. i remember the first time that i saw on the news that people have to actually wear face masks because the air pollution was too inadequate to breathe normally. now it seems quite normal to be doning your favourite face mask and not so much like a scene from a david lynch film set in the future on some isolated sun planet.

at first when we arrived in seoul, it was only the elderly and young children that were wearing the masks, but now they are being worn by virtually everyone. if you see someone not wearing one, you instinctively want to tell the person to 'put one on as we are having a highly toxic day today'. it still makes me shiver to even contemplate that, let alone write a joke about it.

however, i think you do have to keep high spirits about the whole situation. this is what most of the people here do, as this is really a situation that is out of control of most people. unfortunately the majority of the population has to suffer because of a few crap decisions that are being followed out by a few.

the unification of korea

February 21st 2007 02:31
Roh Moo-hyun
one step closer to unification
big news here in south korea this morning was the announcement of moves being made to unify the north with the south of korea. statements made by the ministry of unification yesterday only go to show that there is a will and in some sense a need to unify the two nations, which is being initiated by the south korean government.

the hot issues that the ministry's lee jae-joung touched upon was concentrating on food aid and attempting to connect severed families between the two nations. the food aid would come in form of fresh food along with fertiliser to assist with the continuation of north korea's depleting agricultural efforts. they also announced efforts to improve communication systems, namely video conferencing, in an attempt to re-connect families that were seperated after the war. it is estimated that there are 480 people living in the communist state.

in november of last year, as the world watched on in horror, and as kim jong-il

kim jong-il has to take a closer look at his dying nation
launched probably his only three nuclear war heads, the americans decided they would take action against this with their super secret weapon of trade sanction. this sadly, was probably the best thing that could have happened to push the two nations together. it has been estimated that 15 percent of north korea's population has died of starvation this winter, majority of them children and the older generation. this has in turn initiated south korea to try to aid the dying nation through a ministry that i am certain most of the western world knows nothing about.

the two are a long way away from unification, but it is positive to see that there are steps being taken by both sides to improve on the current situation. it is also through other nations now entering into talks with north korea, namely australia, opening up trade once again that a more secure stance of global vitallity has been taken. john howard, the australian prime minister, has also announced that he will send ministers over to the pyeongyang pennisula to discuss trade relations. australia cut ties with the nation in october of 2002. maybe this is a benchmark for things to come?
