we care.....
i work at samsung. it is a good job. i am in charge of the legal team. i am paid well. my hours are long. i like my job.

i spent this weekend with my family. we went to samsung plaza. we bought some things for the house - a new lounge, some new sheets, and a water bowl for the dog.

i also bought some new clothes that i desperately needed. a new burberry hat, some gucci glasses, and some prada pants. the kids also needed some new osh kosh bgosh outfits. they look cute. my wife also needed a new bean pole polo shirt and some tommy hilfiger socks.

afterwards we went to the food plaza on the roof. we ate cheeseburgers, fries and coke. after that we had a baskin and robbins ice cream.

we then went to the movie cinema. we watched 300. we had popcorn and coke.

we did the grocery shopping for the week. diet yoghurt. oreos. poptarts. coke.

we then drove home in our k(i)a. i filled up with petrol on the way.

it was an expensive weekend, so i put it all on my samsung finance card.

i work at samsung. it is a good job. i am.........

yellow dust - masks a must!

April 1st 2007 17:43
to continue on this series of doom and gloom entries of late, i thought i would enlighten the anthroblogogy readers to my environmental situation at the moment.

yellow dust storms in south korea
down town seoul. image from terradaily.com
i awoke this morning to read this newspaper article from the korea herald. this is also all over the television due to the yellow dust storms are the worst they have ever been. and if you walk outside, it is easy to see why.

this is a result of china's massive push on industrialisation, and the lack of winter type weather on their northern deserts. so as a result, china, korea, and japan have to put up with toxic sand blowing across their respective countries for 3 months every year. this dust is particularly bad for the elderly, the young and paople with respiratory and heart conditions. we are advised to stay indoors, with some schools opting for a day off classes during the worst of it. we are also told to wash our hands and feet(?) more regularly, although some of the guys around here should probably do that anyway.

face masks
the suggested apparel for the next few months
unfortunately each year gets worse and worse. so much so that masks are now a neccesity. i remember the first time that i saw on the news that people have to actually wear face masks because the air pollution was too inadequate to breathe normally. now it seems quite normal to be doning your favourite face mask and not so much like a scene from a david lynch film set in the future on some isolated sun planet.

at first when we arrived in seoul, it was only the elderly and young children that were wearing the masks, but now they are being worn by virtually everyone. if you see someone not wearing one, you instinctively want to tell the person to 'put one on as we are having a highly toxic day today'. it still makes me shiver to even contemplate that, let alone write a joke about it.

however, i think you do have to keep high spirits about the whole situation. this is what most of the people here do, as this is really a situation that is out of control of most people. unfortunately the majority of the population has to suffer because of a few crap decisions that are being followed out by a few.

we had such a good time here, and were looked after so well that i thought we should at least do some shameless promotion for this hotel in cheonan, south korea.

say hotel cheonan, south korea
a must stay in cheonan
when we arrived in cheonan, we had no idea on where to stay so hopefully this will assist some random travelller that searches for where to stay in cheonan. the hotel is called the say hotel, and is what they call a love motel that offers hourly rates. having said that, they also cater for guests that require a bit more from their hotel.

the rooms are very cleaned and well maintained, and contain a bed, fridge, television, small table and chairs, water purifier in every room, and an electric bidet (which is excellent, see here). they supply you with refreshments and free tea and coffee. the hotel patrons are more than happy, and love to have a chat in both korean and english.

the rates range from 25 000 won per hour, to 35 000 overnight, and 40 000 per night with internet access. as there are no street names or numbers, you have to find them by landmarks. when exiting the cheonan train station, turn left and go across the car park. go past the taxi rank and down into the subway under the main road (you don't want to attempt to cross this road!). when in the subway take the first exit on the right (about 20 meters walk), and this will bring you out the 'gs' convenience store. walk away from the train station to the first laneway on your right and you will see the hotel at the end of the laneway. you will agree that it is a little gem for cheonan!

the unification of korea

February 21st 2007 02:31
Roh Moo-hyun
one step closer to unification
big news here in south korea this morning was the announcement of moves being made to unify the north with the south of korea. statements made by the ministry of unification yesterday only go to show that there is a will and in some sense a need to unify the two nations, which is being initiated by the south korean government.

the hot issues that the ministry's lee jae-joung touched upon was concentrating on food aid and attempting to connect severed families between the two nations. the food aid would come in form of fresh food along with fertiliser to assist with the continuation of north korea's depleting agricultural efforts. they also announced efforts to improve communication systems, namely video conferencing, in an attempt to re-connect families that were seperated after the war. it is estimated that there are 480 people living in the communist state

another fascinating area to look at within the lifestyle of the qataris is how their economy ticks. by being ruled under a monachal system, there is not that many true qataris. a brief history lesson on them shows that they were a nomadic tribe until late in the 19th century, and found that they liked the little area of qatar that they discovered and would settle there. a few good wars later, to settle who rules and owns what, and the mere 100 000 of them sorted it out and settled. the estimate of the population is 839,213 (july 2006 - wikipedia leaving an approximate of 700 000 immigrant workers and settlers. needless to say there is quite a large gap between rich and poor.

what ever happened to gofer and doc?

November 26th 2006 14:07
well i'm not so sure what happened to the two characters from 'the love boat', but i do know where the boat is, and i am typing this entry from the business center of it! to explain on this a little further, i am working at the 15th asian games in daho, qatar at the moment and the living quarters for the staff is on three cruise ships that are moored at the dock. you could imagine my surprise and delight when i discovered that it is indeed the 'new flamenco', the very ship that they shot 'the love boat' on! i'm also hoping that at the end of every day we get to see the captain marry two people who you thought might never get it together.... with a sunset in the background..... whilst the doc sings to them.... etc. etc. but here's the view from the top deck of doha city:
