"There is no progress in art, any more than there is progress in making love. There are simply different ways of doing it." Man Ray
scrubs
not meaning to dampen people's spirits during the festive season, but i am a little in two minds after the recent pre christmas bullshit that i just experienced. i'm the first to be under the christmas tree on the morning of the 25th, so i am all about the present giving thang, but i also think that people need to chill out a bit when 'going through the motions' of buying gifts for others.

the first time i noticed this was on the morning of the 22nd when i went to a shopping mall with my father-in-law. this is a time of year when we should be rejoicing to be hanging out with friends and family, and even happy to be buying them a little something something to say 'hey i think you are alright' or whatever you might need to say. however all i could see while i was walking around was people with looks of numbness, or disgust, or anger even - not what was beaming off my face that's for sure.

i almost dropped my shit (but managed to refrain and ignore it) when i was challenged to the last copy of scrubs season 1 to 3. i was on the phone to my wife asking whether we should go for scrubs or arrested development when this girl over heard me say 'scrubs' and instantly became the biggest fan of the series that ever was. we both saw that there was only one copy of it left on the shelf and she starting freaking out to her friend while i was still on the phone.

so i started moving toward the counter to get one of the people to open the cabinet for me. i finish on the phone and i could feel her hovering around me like some little yappy dog about to strike when finally she says 'do you want that copy of scrubs?' and i said yes. she then says ' well i want it too,' to which i retort with ' shall we battle it out with paper, scissors, rock?' to which she didn't find it too funny. i start thinking well let's let fate decide the winner.

in the mean time her friend manages to grab one of the service dudes who unlocks the cabinet and thereby ending a terrific sneako interception!!! i obviously wasn't after it as much as she was so i walked away a little frustrated but also knowing that my old friend karma would have something to say about this so i guess i have the last laugh really.

morale of the story: know one likes a band wagon jumper....

why are people so unkind?

angry xmas
thanks to andy hamilton for the pic
we have all just gone through it..... chaotic shopping centres, full car parks, christmas bargains...... and it makes you wonder why it is exactly we all go through this 'happy' time of the year?

allow me to share a story with you about my introduction to this festive season. it was the 24th of december and i was off to my brother in law's gym to do a last workout before the feasting began. it was about 10 o'clock in the morning so both myself and brett were in good moods, however both surprised by the lack of car parks available (the gym is adjoined to a shopping centre). so we started doing the crawl around waiting to spot someone walking towards their car when we come around the corner to a complete stop as two cars are buying for the same spot. neither would give way so it was a complete stalemate.

with that the original car drives out and one of the waiting cars parks length ways in front of the car park. this begins a verbal onslaught from both parties

"you &*()head!!! we were here first!!"
"oh &*() off ya &*(), it was clearly ours!!"
"you blah blah blah......" and on it goes.

the rest of us were just stuck watching this take place. eventually one gives way and finds another park down further which prompts me think 'it's just a car park'. but it doesn't end there!! they both park at the same time, get out of their respective cars and take off into the shopping centre continuing the argument that they started in the car park. thankfully the rest of us saw the funny side to it and had to have a bit of a chuckle at the absurdity of it.

once we all got through this part of the 'yukky' christmas, it was on with the family celebrations and a distant memory of the car park shenanigans.

to round of this week's 'what would you be' series, i have left it reasonably open, that being any kind of accessory.

me sporting a tag heuer
if i had to be an kind of accessory, i would have to be a tag heuer watch. is there anything that one of these bad boys don't go with? i mean you could wear it to the opera, to the office, to a death metal concert and all the while know that you are right on time. a bit chunky but completely styling throughout the luscious curves, and a big head to boot! as you can see, the tag completely suits my new look!

what kind of food would you be?

June 21st 2007 06:35
if you could be any kind of food, from any kind of culture, what would it be?

spanish doughnuts churros
i would have to be a spanish doughnut, also called churros. after recently going to the cinema in south korea and discovering these little bad boys as treats for munching along with the usual pop corn and coke, i found a new best friend. all doughy and rolled in cinnamon sugar, these slightly chewy little bundles of joy are best eaten after being dipped in chocolate. the perfect compliment for a really bitter espresso, they are one of the drunks best friends at about 11 o'clock at night. just try it once and you will love it for life!

what kind of shoes would you be?

if you could be a pair of shoes what would you be?

adidas shell tops
if i had to be a pair of shoes, i would be have to be a pair of adidas shell tops. a classic shoe that seems to go with most styles of pants (except those blue jeans that jerry signfield used to wear). brought into the spotlight be run dmc they were destined for greatness and still have to be the weapon of choice for most hip hoppers. comfortable to wear, comes in a trillion styles, and just oozes cool from every angle. the adidas shell top.

if you could be an alcoholic drink what would you be?

long island ice tea
i think i would have to be a long island ice tea. just the right blend of so many styles of alcohols, served in style (sometimes in a really over sized tea cup!), often adds a slight amount of sophistication to the drinker, makes you feel all tropical when you think of it, tends to do your head in after one, and is the favourite drink of p.u.t.s.

most people have characteristics that could be likened to many objects - animal, mineral, or vegetable. generally we seem to pick things that reflect our personalities and sometimes don't realise how much they are actually saying about us. what kind of ring i wear, which style of backpack i don, which music t-shirt i am wearing - they all say something about the person and are a kind of a reflection of what is going on inside. for this week on anthroblogogy, i will be posing questions of what particular item you would be in various categories.

jello had it right when he spoke of this all those years ago.but last night, never was it driven home so much.

after a hard day of assessment, followed by some farewell drinks, i decided to call it a day and watch some television before i went to bed. unfortunately, i choose mtv to watch. now i know we live in a post modern world, but mtv talking about bad film clip conventions? c'mon they started most of them

truck pull
after this we all start cruising around in buggies and acting with tina turner
i knew there were crazy sports out there, look at high jump for example. the last time i had to jump a fence i didn't run at it from the side, and i most certainly didn't roll like a worm that has been half squashed when i went over it. and there wasn't a nice big fluffy mattress on the other side waiting for me to 'flop' my body on to it, more like a spikey cactus or a half starved german shepherd.

i suppose it is safe to say that most sports start as something that is done in everyday life, and then followed by human nature in that we must beat those that try to come up against us. look at football (or soccer as it might be known as

great places to stay in seoul

May 3rd 2007 06:20
worldcup korea guest house
we found the best guest house to stay in seoul on the weekend, and thought it was only fair to share this information to anyone planning a trip to the mapogu district. worldcup korea guest house is a lovely little apartment block nestled into the back streets of the mapogu district on the northern side of the han rider river, very close to where all the action happens. here they provide the traveler with all that they need: quiet clean rooms, spacious living areas, a fully usable kitchen, cable television, internet access, iron, showers, filtered water, and a free breakfast!

after having sampled some of the other guest houses in seoul, it is in my opinion that this is the best. unlike other ones, this one is affordable, close to the subway system, clean and not dusty, and if you call when you arrive at mapogu office station (line 6, exit 5) they will come around and pick you up. you have the choice of single, double, twin, or dormitory style rooms and each is priced accordingly. surrounding the guest house is also a great selection of korean bbq style houses that offer some of the yummiest food available (not to mention cheap as). so get your room, duck out for a bite to eat, a bottle or two of soju, and then off to whatever event seoul has to offer

my 'memoirs' moment
as we walked, the cherry blossoms flurried like a summer snow fall
after having spent the night at one of the craziest places on earth, i found myself sitting in a pc baang somewhere in incheon wondering what to do next. after doing a bit of a search on what is what in the city, i hadn't really found anything apart from incheon having an underground shopping mall, and a china town. as i wasn't in a spending mood, china town was the obvious choice.

not really knowing where i was, and not being able to find a map that was detailed enough, i thought the only thing for it was to jump on a bus and see where i ended up. i jumped on the 21 and headed toward the main bus terminal at where i had arrived the day before. after a few stops, this little man jumped on and walked towards me with a big smile. i smiled back and followed up with a 'annyonghaseyo', to which the man was very impressed. i then proceeded to have my first korean conversation, proving that my lessons are actually paying off....finally

a fantastic weekend - incheon part 1

April 30th 2007 10:35
korean melons
some of the beautiful food on offer in incheon

this weekend was one that was full of excitement, travel, new people, and education about places that are older than i have ever really considered. the majority of my time was spent in incheon, a city north of seoul and just south of the demilitarized zone that separates north and south korea. it is a place that is made up of many different lifestyles and cultures and has history oozing from every pore that you brush past. each area has its own tale but my journies allowed me to explore two very different lifestyles within the one area.

this weekend - insadong

April 23rd 2007 04:11
sunday provided us with the chance to check out insadong province in seoul. this is an area that is aimed at western tourists, so i had mixes emotions about the entire day. even at home a i generally stay away from areas that are aimed at these kind of markets, but when in rome... although it is quite a beautiful area that reeks with korean tradition, it is also quite plastic in that it is catering for the mass audience from the western world - and that is indeed who was there.

we did stumble across some nice galleries and i could have spent millions of won on many of the contemporary pop art pieces that were on offer, and there were of course many places to eat and nibble and refresh. one thing that i had to ponder over was why are we traveling to these places to see different cultures, yet these different cultures are trying so eagerly to accommodate and assimilate to our culture? but then who are we to tell them not to? i also had to wonder where it will all end up in a few decades from now

angry grannies
thugs for life
i was talking to my english class the other day, and i told them of this story that happened to me whilst travelling on the subway in seoul. this old lady basically shoved her shopping bag up my ass as i was standing (allowing her to have the seat), as she was trying to exit the train. she could have excused herself or nudged as though she wanted to get through. i was most surprised and thought it deserved a 'sorry'.

when prompting the students as to why she didn't say sorry, they simply said they don't say sorry. this started me thinking. why do we say sorry all the time
