adult - why bother?
March 25th 2007 17:49
adult have released their new album 'why bother?' on the 20th of march through thrill jockey, and is one hell of a record! as this is the release of their forth album, this married couple from detroit have unleashed a package unto the world with the release of their debut in directing in 'the folk trilogy' film clip (march 1st). to coincide with the release of the album, they have also released their second clip from the album, 'i feel worse when i'm with you':
the funny thing about adult is that i have always felt not quite right when i listen to their music. their deep dark sound mixed with a slamming beats trying to expunge any need for lyrics, always makes me want to run under the bed and hide until 'the bad man has gone away'. that was until i saw this clip and realised that adult are merely two crazy kids with a satirical look upon the world. now i know why i kept going back for more.
the new album is one of those exact situations not unlike a car crash where you don't want to look, but just can't help it. after listening to 'why bother?' a few times, it has really become not unlike a pop album to me, in that the songs are so infectious that they ifiltrate your psyche and you catch yourself humming them the next day. this is credit to the sensational production of the album.
their sound is basically refined a litle as compared to their 2003 release of 'anxiety always', but is very much a sound that is synonymous with adult now. drawing on compositions and sounds that were made infamous by the likes of steve albini during his big black days, but mused upon the jack hammering technique that was developed by atari teenage riot and alec empire.
adult's ability to layer a rhizome of sounds and samples is admirable. the sound is further punished by adam lee miller's driving bass line with a complimenting drum sequence. the gestalt is further complemented by the haunting, off key vocals that nicola kuperus brings to the mix. her unique sound and lyrics like 'we'll walk in the grass and swim in the lake, then it will be time to adjust your fate..... herd me, herd me...' make for a delectable aural experience.
adult 'why bother?' is available from them, itunes, and various outlets (?).
