this saturday night at 8pm (aedst) we are all being encouraged to turn off our lights and electrical devices for an hour. i have no problem with that in itself and i think it will be a good thing to participate in. however how much will this really save or is it moreover an exercise in realisation for the masses?
i come in with this type of thinking after having seen an advert this morning for jetstar. it was the typical shot of someone happy and in mid jump - however the slogan over the top was something about offsetting carbon emissions. i am clearly not an expert in this field but from what i understand it is about offloading your amount of emissions, in a financial way, to another company that doesn't let off as many.
now there hasn't been any technology released that puts a huge muffler on air planes to stop the amount of smoke coming out of the back of them, so the fact remains the same that they are still putting out as much as they always have. it doesn't matter if you are selling these toxins to some one else to make you feel better at night, the fact remains the same that there is still massive amounts of shit coming out the back of air planes!!
so how does this advert warrant any kind of celebration again? oh, that's right. it doesn't.
this gig certainly set the standard for live shows in 2008. being set in the regal surroundings of the forum theatre in melbourne, my everything was in awe as soon as i took one step into the complex. however this was quickly jolted by a edgy sense to the support act that were spinning discs (whose name i never did catch). they were unimpressed with the crowd and appeared bored, as did the audience - although i suspect that everyone was still coming to grips with reality after bashing it around the head a few days prior. still, i enjoyed their take on the in sound from far out as i perused the crowd that was made up of youngsters, middle-agers, and even some curious older folk that know good music when they hear it.
one beer later and someone comes out stage left to flash control with a torch signifying that the band are ready to come on. and with that NYPC come running out as four silver banners each with the letters n y p and c fall from the heavens to provide the back drop for the next 70 minutes.
they blasted out with jerk me (a personal favourite of mine) which starts the crowd either slowly bopping or shaking their tale feather to the reminiscent sounds of that post-punk era. it was at this stage that i couldn't help but think that singer tahita bulmer was heavily influenced by michael hutchence, both lyrically and most definitely in how she moves. it was just plain simple cool to watch her sway to and fro as she amped up the crowd.
they worked their way through tracks off the album fantastic playroom and i had never realised the groove potential of the track hiding on the staircase until i heard it live - it was the track that synced the band with the audience and put us both on the same plain. as a punter, i could literally see that the band were genuinely happy that we had come out to see them and were giving them a really warm reception. you could feel the love....
the highlight of the live show had to be their interpretation of the 90s classic pump up the jam by technotronic. i didn't know whether to laugh or shake my booty because it was just so damn good! after one encore they finally wrapped up the show with the feel-good track the get go, which left everyone humming the track as they found their feet taking them to their post new young pony club destination. i was certainly pleased to have seen this gig and am curious to know how big their fan base will be when they return to our shores.
my sister bought a skateboard for my nephew (or maybe it was santa - not sure) for christmas. this is cool for a few reasons - one - skaters are usually the coolest kids at school, two - chicks normally dig skaters more than any others, and three - you just look smooth when you are carving up along the concrete paths and mixing in some flip tricks.
as no one else skates in my family, it was up to me to teach all the nephews how to skate. easy enough - start with the ollie which is the gateway to all skate tricks. most of my nephews picked it up or are at least on their way to picking it up. as i was teaching my young padawans, i started thinking about how cool skating used to be, but this thought was quickly reinforced with one of how much longer my bones take to heal now and that a fall really, really hurts now.. (pussy i hear you say?)
upon checking my emails, my cousin sends me through this link:
not meaning to dampen people's spirits during the festive season, but i am a little in two minds after the recent pre christmas bullshit that i just experienced. i'm the first to be under the christmas tree on the morning of the 25th, so i am all about the present giving thang, but i also think that people need to chill out a bit when 'going through the motions' of buying gifts for others.
the first time i noticed this was on the morning of the 22nd when i went to a shopping mall with my father-in-law. this is a time of year when we should be rejoicing to be hanging out with friends and family, and even happy to be buying them a little something something to say 'hey i think you are alright' or whatever you might need to say. however all i could see while i was walking around was people with looks of numbness, or disgust, or anger even - not what was beaming off my face that's for sure
we have all just gone through it..... chaotic shopping centres, full car parks, christmas bargains...... and it makes you wonder why it is exactly we all go through this 'happy' time of the year?
allow me to share a story with you about my introduction to this festive season. it was the 24th of december and i was off to my brother in law's gym to do a last workout before the feasting began. it was about 10 o'clock in the morning so both myself and brett were in good moods, however both surprised by the lack of car parks available (the gym is adjoined to a shopping centre). so we started doing the crawl around waiting to spot someone walking towards their car when we come around the corner to a complete stop as two cars are buying for the same spot. neither would give way so it was a complete stalemate
so here is one of the reasons for the lack of posting on orble in the last little while.... my documentary that i have been producing (well editing) for the last six months. but it is finally finished and i would like to share it with others. basically:
it is a small snippet into gloria's life and her temporary version of the unit we call a family. this is the final assessment piece for the subject tv2 in my second year of media. check out the music also by two4k, a.k.a. carl anderson
as the summer has finally hit melbourne it would seem, albeit a hot change from the last few refreshingly freezing winter days, the attitude to get out and enjoy the sun is upon us all. bbq's, beers, and general frolicking in parks in the flavour that most of choose to welcome the glorious sun that we have been deprived of for so long.
melbourne has the added asset of the yarra river winding through the city with its glorious parks lining its entirety. this makes for a real hot spot for both people on the edge of the yarra enjoying the various barbies and space for 'six and out' (australian for cricket), along with those that choose to take a leisurely cruise on the many boats and floating cafes that cruise up and down this murky water playground
travelling, uni, moving house. it all banks up after a while!! unfortunately interaction with this site has been limited of late.... but never fear it will be back up very soon. however for those of you that are interested, i am back in oz and ready to take back up the reigns of anthroblogogy!!! stay tuned for more suff..
to round of this week's 'what would you be' series, i have left it reasonably open, that being any kind of accessory.
if i had to be an kind of accessory, i would have to be a tag heuer watch. is there anything that one of these bad boys don't go with? i mean you could wear it to the opera, to the office, to a death metal concert and all the while know that you are right on time. a bit chunky but completely styling throughout the luscious curves, and a big head to boot! as you can see, the tag completely suits my new look!
if you could be any kind of food, from any kind of culture, what would it be?
i would have to be a spanish doughnut, also called churros. after recently going to the cinema in south korea and discovering these little bad boys as treats for munching along with the usual pop corn and coke, i found a new best friend. all doughy and rolled in cinnamon sugar, these slightly chewy little bundles of joy are best eaten after being dipped in chocolate. the perfect compliment for a really bitter espresso, they are one of the drunks best friends at about 11 o'clock at night. just try it once and you will love it for life!
